Custom Rugs and Wall Pieces for a Gaming Room and Desk Setup

What size rug goes under a gaming desk, what chair casters do to a tufted rug, how a wall piece looks on stream, and how RGB lighting shifts yarn colours.

Custom Rugs and Wall Pieces for a Gaming Room and Desk Setup

You can have a custom rug and wall piece made for a gaming room: a short, dense tufted rug under the desk that stands up to chair casters, and a tufted wall piece with your own logo or theme on the wall the camera sees. The rug is sized from the desk width plus room for the chair to roll back. The wall piece hangs at the height where it sits behind your head on camera when you are seated. If you want a known game character, the copyright question needs to be settled first.

What size rug should go under a gaming desk?#

Big enough that the casters stay on the rug even when the chair is pushed all the way back. Casters rolling on and off the edge wear the rug and jolt the chair.

How I work it out:

  • Width: desk width plus 20 to 30 cm on each side.
  • Depth: desk depth plus 80 to 90 cm for the chair.

Some examples:

  • 120x60 cm desk: a rug of about 170x150 cm.
  • 140x70 cm desk: about 190x160 cm.
  • 160x80 cm desk: about 210x170 cm.

With an L-shaped desk, think of one rectangle covering both arms rather than two rugs side by side in the corner. The join would land exactly where the chair turns.

The general sizing logic is in what size rug and painting for a living room; for a gaming room the same rules apply a bit more generously.

Do chair casters damage a tufted rug?#

Over time they leave a mark, but the right choices make it a non-issue. Casters crush the same line every day, and long, soft pile gradually lies down along it.

My suggestions:

  • Pile: choose a short, dense cut pile. Long, fluffy pile does not belong under a desk.
  • Pattern: keep the area where the chair turns dark and plain. On a light, finely patterned area, crushing shows far more.
  • Chair mat: the most durable solution is a clear chair mat over the chair zone. The design stays visible and the pile is protected.
  • Non-slip backing: on parquet or laminate the rug slides with the chair. You need the non-slip backing extra or a pad; options are in rug pads and non-slip underlays.

I explain cut pile and loop pile in cut pile vs loop pile. Loop pile can be used under a desk, but under the weight of casters the loops can open up over time.

How does a wall piece look behind you on stream?#

Good, because a textile surface is matte and does not reflect light. A glossy poster or a glazed frame picks up your lights and monitor and turns into white patches on camera; a tufted piece does not. The pile also adds depth: the camera sees a three-dimensional surface instead of a flat wall.

What I pay attention to so it reads well on camera:

  • Position: when you are seated, the centre of the piece should sit a little above or beside your head. For most desk setups that puts the centre 120 to 140 cm from the floor.
  • Size: a webcam usually sees the wall 1 to 1.5 m behind you. At that distance a piece 60 to 100 cm wide fits comfortably in frame.
  • Lettering: if your channel or gamer name is on it, make the letters at least 8 cm tall. Smaller text does not read on a 1080p stream.
  • Pattern: avoid very fine, tight stripes. Camera sensors can turn them into a shimmering wavy pattern (moire).
  • Contrast: keep a clear lightness difference between logo and background. The camera merges close tones that the eye can still separate.

The general rules for putting your own logo or name on a piece are in rugs with your name or logo.

Does RGB lighting change the colours of a rug or wall piece?#

Yes. Yarn reflects the colour of the light that falls on it. White, cream and light grey pick up RGB the most; under purple light a white area looks purple. Black and dark tones absorb light and barely change.

That is not a drawback, it is a design decision. Two ways to go:

  • If you want to play with light, keep the large areas light and neutral. The piece changes as you change the RGB.
  • If you want your logo's colour to stay the same in any light, use saturated, dark tones for the logo and a neutral background.

Before approving colours, seeing the yarn samples under your own room lighting is the safest bet. How lighting affects artwork is in how to light paintings and wall rugs.

Do a rug and wall piece help the room's acoustics?#

They help, but they do not replace acoustic panels. A textile surface absorbs some of the high-frequency sound that hard walls and floors bounce back. The ring of an empty room drops and your mic sounds drier.

In practice the biggest difference comes from a rug on the floor together with a piece on the wall facing the microphone. Bass and outside noise need proper acoustic treatment. I go into the acoustic and visual effect of wall rugs in decorating with wall rugs.

A known game character, game logo or team crest belongs to its rights holder, and an unauthorised exact copy can cause problems. This is general information, not legal advice. The details, and ways to make a design your own, are in having a character, brand or Pinterest design made into a rug.

A practical alternative is a design about your identity as a player rather than the game itself: your gamer name, your channel logo, an abstract pattern drawn from the palette of your favourite game, or an original figure that represents you. These are safe, and nobody else has one.

How do you keep a gaming room rug clean?#

A rug under a desk has two enemies: crumbs and spills. Vacuuming once a week on low suction lifts crumbs before they sink into the pile. With spills, the first rule is to blot with a dry cloth, not rub. For detailed care, see how to clean a tufted rug.

Finished tufted work is on the tufting page. If you know your desk size and have a design in mind, choose rug or wall piece in the calculator on the custom order page to see the current price range and production time, and attach any logo or sketch as a reference.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size rug do I need under a gaming desk?

For width, add 20 to 30 cm on each side of the desk; for depth, add 80 to 90 cm to the desk depth for the chair. For a 140x70 cm desk, a rug of about 190x160 cm keeps the chair on the rug even when pushed right back.

Will an office chair ruin a handmade rug?

On long, soft pile it leaves a crushed track over time. A short, dense cut pile, a dark plain colour where the chair turns and, most durable of all, a clear chair mat largely prevent it.

How high should a wall piece hang behind a streaming setup?

When you are seated, its centre should sit a little above or beside your head; in most setups that means 120 to 140 cm from the floor. At 1 to 1.5 m from the camera, a piece 60 to 100 cm wide fits comfortably in frame.

Does RGB light change a rug's colour?

Yes. White, cream and light grey yarns pick up RGB colour the most, while dark tones barely change. If you want a logo to look the same in any light, keep it in saturated dark tones on a neutral background.

Can I get a rug with a game character on it?

A known game character belongs to its rights holder, and an unauthorised exact copy can cause problems; this is general information, not legal advice. Your gamer name, channel logo or an original design inspired by the game's colours is a safe alternative.
