When working with oil paint, you may sometimes find that the paint is thicker than you would like. Especially when working on fine details or trying to move the paint more easily across the canvas, you may start wondering: Can oil paint be thinned with any type of oil?

If you don't have linseed oil or turpentine at home, can you use olive oil or sunflower oil from the kitchen?

The answer is a little more complicated than you might expect.

Can You Add Any Oil to Oil Paint?

The fact that oil paint contains oil does not mean that every type of oil can be added to it. It is important that the oils and mediums used with oil paint are compatible with the paint.

For this reason, oils made specifically for artists, such as linseed oil, are a much more reliable choice for oil painting.

Linseed oil can make the paint smoother and more fluid while working well with the structure of the paint. However, it should still be used in moderation. Adding too much oil can make the paint excessively glossy and cause it to take longer to dry.

Can Oil Paint Be Thinned with Sunflower Oil?

Sunflower oil can make oil paint more fluid. So, technically, you can see a change in the consistency of the paint.

However, sunflower oil is not an oil made for oil painting. For this reason, it is not a recommended choice for a permanent artwork.

If you have no other materials available and simply want to make the paint a little easier to move around, you can experiment with a very small amount. However, it should not be considered an ideal method for thinning oil paint.

Especially for a painting that you want to preserve for many years, it is much better to use materials specifically made for oil painting.

Can Oil Paint Be Thinned with Olive Oil?

The same applies to olive oil.

When olive oil is added, you may notice that the paint becomes smoother and more fluid. I have also tried olive oil while working with oil paint. It does make the paint easier to move, but it does not give the same result as linseed oil.

Compared with linseed oil, olive oil is not designed specifically for oil painting, so it does not offer the same working properties. For this reason, I would not choose olive oil for professional or permanent artworks.

However, if you are really in a difficult situation and simply want to make the paint a little more fluid so you can continue working, you can experiment with a very small amount. Still, it is not something I would recommend making a regular part of your painting process.

Olive Oil or Sunflower Oil?

Both are cooking oils and are not specifically made for oil painting. For this reason, neither should be considered a recommended oil for oil painting.

If you have to choose, the better option is linseed oil made specifically for artists.

Olive oil or sunflower oil may make the paint easier to move, but when working with oil paint, making the paint more fluid is not the only thing that matters. The way the paint dries, how it behaves on the surface, and how it holds up over time are also important.

Turpentine or Oil?

It is also important to understand the difference between turpentine and oils.

Turpentine can be used to make oil paint more fluid, especially when working with thin layers during the early stages of a painting.

Linseed oil, on the other hand, adds oil to the paint, making it smoother and more fluid. It can also affect the gloss and drying time of the paint.

For this reason, turpentine and linseed oil are not complete substitutes for one another. They produce different results depending on what you want to achieve and which stage of the painting you are working on.

Can You Thin Oil Paint with Water?

No. Oil paint is not water-based, so it cannot be thinned with water.

Water is not compatible with the structure of oil paint and will not thin it in the way you want. Washing an oil paint brush with water alone is also not enough to remove the paint.

For this reason, when working with oil paint, you should use materials that are appropriate for the type of painting you are doing rather than water.

So, Which Oil Should You Use?

If your goal is to make oil paint more fluid, the safest approach is to use materials specifically made for oil painting.

Turpentine: Can be used to thin the paint and make it more fluid, especially in the early layers. Linseed oil: Adds oil to the paint and can increase its flow and gloss. Oil painting mediums: Made specifically to modify the working properties of oil paint. Sunflower oil: Can be experimented with in a very small amount if you are in a difficult situation, but it is not recommended for permanent artworks. Olive oil: Can make the paint more fluid, but it does not give the same working properties as oils made for oil painting, such as linseed oil, and is not recommended for permanent artworks. Water: Not suitable for thinning oil paint.

Just because a cooking oil makes your paint move more easily does not mean it is the right material for oil painting. As I experienced when trying olive oil myself, it does change the consistency of the paint, but it does not give the same working feel as linseed oil.

So, experimenting with a very small amount when you are in a difficult situation is one thing; using it regularly is another. Especially when you are creating a painting that you have put a lot of time and effort into and want to preserve for many years, using materials specifically made for oil painting is the safest choice.
