ANOMALY reinterprets Gustave Courbet’s self-portrait through oil painting and glitch aesthetics. Using visual distortion and deformation to disrupt realistic representation, the work transforms the face into an image suspended between familiarity and unreality. It challenges perceptions of identity and normality, turning visual disruption into a distinctive form of artistic expression.
The Story
ANOMALY is an experimental portrait that reinterprets Gustave Courbet’s self-portrait through oil painting and visual distortion. By pushing a familiar face beyond the boundaries of conventional representation, the work brings portraiture into dialogue with the visual language of the digital age. Interventions that disrupt the integrity of the face position the figure between recognition and alienation, questioning identity, perception, and the concept of normality. Moving away from realistic representation, the portrait transforms through visual distortion and deformation, opening up new possibilities for artistic expression. Imperfection, disruption, and irregularity become more than formal interventions; they serve as tools for exploring the instability of reality and the role of perception in shaping identity. By merging traditional portraiture with contemporary glitch aesthetics, ANOMALY investigates how the familiar can become uncanny, estranged, and unexpectedly transformed.
