How Are Tufted Rug Prices Determined? Size, Detail and Add-Ons
Tufted rug pricing comes down to area, technique and detail density. We break down our real per-square-metre rates, worked examples and deposit terms.
Updated: August 20, 2026

The price of a tufted rug comes down to three things: the surface area of the piece, the technique used, and how detailed the design is. In our studio a floor rug starts at 11,000 TL per square metre, a wall panel at 9,000 TL, and an acrylic canvas painting at 7,000 TL. This article explains why those numbers are what they are, what each option adds, and how to work out a figure for your own dimensions.
We prefer to be open about pricing. Most studios say "get in touch"; we put the arithmetic on the table, because messaging someone without knowing your budget makes nobody comfortable.
The short answer: price comes from three things#
The formula is genuinely this simple:
- Surface area in square metres times the technique's per-square-metre rate
- That figure multiplied by a detail-density factor
- Fixed amounts for any add-ons you choose
The result never falls below 3,500 TL; even on small pieces the frame setup, design work and edge finishing take the same time.
1. Surface area: everything starts with square metres#
Area is width times height divided by 10,000. A rug 80 cm wide and 120 cm tall works out to 0.96 square metres.
Area dominates for a simple reason: every square centimetre is punched individually with the tufting gun. Twice the area means twice the yarn and roughly twice the hours. This is the fundamental difference from a machine-made rug, where size does not raise cost anywhere near as steeply.
We work between 20 and 200 cm on any side. Larger pieces are possible but need a separate conversation about framing and shipping.
2. Technique: why wall panels, floor rugs and canvas differ#
We offer three techniques at three different rates:
- Tufted wall panel: 9,000 TL per square metre
- Tufted floor rug: 11,000 TL per square metre
- Acrylic painting on canvas: 7,000 TL per square metre
The difference comes from material density and durability expectations. A rug that will be walked on needs tighter loops, thicker backing and stronger adhesion. A wall panel faces no abrasion, so that effort goes into the visual quality of the surface instead.
Acrylic canvas carries the lowest rate because paint covers a surface faster and with less material than yarn. That does not make it cheap; it makes it a different production economy. If you are wondering how acrylic differs from oil, we compared the two in a separate article.
If you cannot decide which technique suits your space, our piece on choosing between tufting and painting may help.
3. Detail density: same area, different labour#
Two rugs can share dimensions while one is a three-colour geometric pattern and the other a portrait with dozens of tonal transitions. Charging the same would not be fair. So we use three tiers:
- Simple: broad colour fields, few transitions. Factor 1
- Moderate detail: multiple forms, soft gradients, lettering or figures. Factor 1.25
- High detail: portraits, fine lines, multi-tone shading. Factor 1.6
Applied to the base rates, that gives:
- Wall panel: simple 9,000, moderate 11,250, high 14,400 TL/m²
- Floor rug: simple 11,000, moderate 13,750, high 17,600 TL/m²
- Acrylic painting: simple 7,000, moderate 8,750, high 11,200 TL/m²
You do not pick the tier yourself; we decide together after looking at your reference image. Most people assume their photo is more complex than it needs to be, and a simplified interpretation usually looks better and costs less.
Add-ons and the base price#
Extras are added as fixed amounts, independent of area:
- Fringed edge: 1,500 TL
- Premium or metallic yarn: 1,200 TL
- Non-slip backing: 750 TL
- Wooden frame: 2,000 TL
Not every add-on makes sense with every technique. Non-slip backing only matters on a floor rug, a wooden frame only on pieces that hang. The calculator hides options that do not apply to your chosen technique.
The base price is 3,500 TL. A 30x40 cm piece needs the same preparation as an 80x120 rug: drawing the design, stretching the cloth, transferring the pattern, backing and edge finishing do not shrink proportionally with size.
Worked examples#
Seeing real figures explains more than any formula:
- 60x60 cm wall panel, simple design: 3,200 - 3,900 TL, where the base price applies
- 80x120 cm floor rug, moderate detail: 11,900 - 14,500 TL
- 50x70 cm acrylic painting, moderate detail: 3,200 - 3,900 TL
- 70x100 cm wall panel, moderate detail, wooden frame: 8,900 - 10,900 TL
- 100x150 cm floor rug, moderate detail, fringed edge and premium yarn: 21,000 - 25,700 TL
- 120x180 cm floor rug, high detail: 34,200 - 41,800 TL
The most common request sits between 80x120 and 100x150, moderate detail, floor rug.
Why we quote a range, not a single number#
The calculator shows a band of plus or minus ten per cent rather than one figure. That is deliberate.
On handmade work the exact number only becomes clear once we have seen your reference. Two pieces of identical size can differ by ten per cent in hours because of pattern complexity. Quoting "12,734 TL" would imply a precision that does not exist; a range is the honest version.
The final price is confirmed after we review your image and dimensions, and it does not change once quoted.
Deposit, timing and payment#
An order begins with a 30 per cent deposit of the estimated amount. For an 80x120 rug at moderate detail that is roughly 3,600 TL. The balance is paid once the piece is finished, before delivery.
Production takes about 21 days on average. Large or highly detailed pieces can run longer; we give you a firm date when the order is confirmed.
The deposit covers yarn purchasing and frame setup — costs incurred up front. Since a custom piece cannot be sold to anyone else, the step protects both sides.
Honest ways to bring the price down#
If you have a fixed budget, there are a few levers worth knowing:
- Reduce the dimensions. Area is the strongest variable, so this moves fastest
- Simplify the design. Moving from high to moderate detail cuts around 22 per cent
- Choose a wall panel instead of a floor rug. Same image, 2,000 TL less per square metre
- Review the add-ons. A fringe looks lovely but is never required
- Look at finished work. Pieces already in the gallery are often more affordable than commissions
What we will not do is cut material quality to hit a number. Yarn type and backing are the same on every piece.
What it costs over time#
It is more realistic to divide the price by the years you will use it. A well-maintained tufted rug lasts decades. Beyond deep cleaning a few times a year, regular dusting and keeping it out of direct sunlight, it costs nothing to own — we set out the care routine we follow separately.
Where a mass-produced rug deforms and gets replaced within five years, a handmade piece has merely started to look lived-in. A custom piece also removes a second cost entirely: you never go looking again because you did not quite like it.
Working out your own figure#
Enter your dimensions, technique and detail tier on our custom order page and the calculator shows the estimated range and deposit immediately. You can upload your reference photo on the same screen; only we ever see those images.
If you have other questions about shipping, delivery or payment, most of them are answered on our frequently asked questions page.
If you are unsure which tier suits what you have in mind, just send the photo. I will look at it and give you both an honest detail tier and a firm price. You are under no obligation to accept a figure you do not like — we can always adjust the size or the design together.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a tufted rug cost per square metre?
In our studio a floor rug starts at 11,000 TL per square metre, a wall panel at 9,000 TL and an acrylic canvas at 7,000 TL. Those rates are for the simple detail tier; moderate detail multiplies by 1.25 and high detail by 1.6.
What is the minimum price for a custom tufted rug?
The base price is 3,500 TL. Even on very small pieces the design, frame setup, backing and edge finishing require the same preparation, so we do not go below that.
Why is the price given as a range instead of one number?
On handmade work the hours can vary by around ten per cent depending on pattern complexity, so the calculator shows a band of plus or minus ten per cent. The final price is confirmed once we have reviewed your reference and dimensions, and it does not change after that.
How much deposit is required to place an order?
We take 30 per cent of the estimated amount as a deposit. The balance is paid once the piece is complete, before delivery. The deposit covers up-front costs such as yarn and frame setup.
How long does a tufted rug order take?
Production averages 21 days. Large or highly detailed pieces can take longer; you are given a firm delivery date when the order is confirmed.
