Custom Tufted Rugs and Wall Panels: A Complete Guide

Commissioning a custom tufted rug or wall panel is a different process from buying something ready-made. You set the dimensions, we build the design together, and the result is a piece that exists nowhere else. This guide walks through everything you need to know in order: which technique to choose, what size will suit your space, which photograph will work, how the price is formed, and how long it all takes.

At Peck Art Studio these pieces are made by Nazife Ünal Tekin alone. The person who takes your order is the person who punches the yarn. That makes the process both more personal and slower.

First decision: wall or floor#

This is where it starts, because it determines the technique.

  • Tufted wall panel: hangs on a wall, never walked on. Since the surface faces no abrasion, all the effort goes into visual quality
  • Tufted floor rug: needs tighter loops, thicker backing and stronger adhesion because it will be walked on
  • Acrylic canvas painting: not tufting, but offered through the same commission flow; lighter, thinner, lower cost

The same image can be produced in all three, but they carry themselves completely differently. Yarn absorbs light and warms a room; paint reflects it and reads sharper. We compared tufting and painting in a separate article.

Choosing dimensions#

We work between 20 and 200 cm on any side. In practice these are the most requested sizes:

  • Wall panel: 50x70, 60x60 and 70x100 cm. Below 60 cm a single panel gets lost on most walls
  • Floor rug: 80x120 and 100x150 cm. For the space in front of a sofa, 120 cm is the most common width
  • Canvas painting: 50x70 and 70x100 cm

When deciding, photograph the wall or the empty space and send it to us. Seeing the room makes it far easier to say which size will sit well — and it prevents the "I wish we had gone bigger" conversation later.

Size is also the strongest price variable. Double the area and you double the surface to be worked.

Building the design together#

Custom requests arrive in three forms:

  • From a photograph: a portrait, a pet, a place, a memory
  • From a logo or a name: offices, children's rooms, gifts
  • From a feeling alone: a colour palette, a mood, a texture to echo

All three work. If you are starting from a photo, we have written separately about which photographs actually work — in short: sharp, well-lit images with uncluttered backgrounds give much better results.

Do not be afraid to simplify. Tufting cannot carry fine detail the way paint can; yarn thickness sets a natural limit. That sounds like a constraint, but it is exactly what makes tufting good: simplified, strong forms that read from across a room.

Detail density and price#

Price comes from three things: surface area, technique and detail density. For detail we use three tiers:

  • Simple: broad colour fields, few transitions
  • Moderate detail: multiple forms, soft gradients, lettering or figures
  • High detail: portraits, fine lines, multi-tone shading

Rates start at 11,000 TL per square metre for a floor rug, 9,000 for a wall panel and 7,000 for acrylic canvas, then rise with the detail multiplier. The base price is 3,500 TL. We broke down exactly how the price is calculated with real figures in a separate article.

There are optional extras: a fringed edge, premium or metallic yarn, non-slip backing, a wooden frame. Each is a fixed amount and only appears where it makes sense for your technique.

How the process runs#

End to end, it goes like this:

  • You choose size, technique and detail tier on the custom order page and see the estimated range immediately
  • You upload your reference image on the same screen. Up to three images, seen only by us
  • Your request receives a tracking code so you can follow it whenever you like
  • We review the image and confirm the final price and delivery date
  • Production begins with a 30 per cent deposit
  • The piece is finished in about 21 days; the balance is paid before delivery

The estimate is given as a band of plus or minus ten per cent because on handmade work the hours depend on pattern complexity. The exact figure is confirmed once we have seen the image, and it does not change after that.

Three mistakes people make#

The same three questions come up again and again:

  • Choosing dimensions that are too small. A 40x40 panel chosen to keep costs down ends up looking stranded on most walls. The same budget spent on a simpler design at a larger size usually produces a better result
  • Sending a crowded photograph. A group of five people will not read on a one-square-metre surface. A single figure is always stronger
  • Choosing colours without the room in mind. The piece will live alongside your walls and furniture, which is why a photo of the space matters

Ready-made or commissioned#

Not every idea needs to be a commission. There are finished pieces in the gallery, often more affordable than a custom order — and available immediately.

A commission makes sense when a specific size is required, when a personal image is involved (a portrait, a memory, a logo), or when you want an exact colour match with the room.

Where to start#

You do not need a settled idea before writing. Most orders begin with "I have something vaguely in mind". Send your photograph through the custom order page, add a shot of the space, and we will work out size and technique together.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I place a custom tufted rug order?

On the custom order page you choose size, technique and detail tier, then upload your reference image. You see the estimated range immediately. After we review the image we confirm the final price and delivery date, and production starts with a 30 per cent deposit.

What sizes are available for a custom rug?

Between 20 and 200 cm on any side. The most requested are 50x70 and 60x60 for wall panels, and 80x120 and 100x150 for floor rugs. Larger pieces are possible but need a prior conversation about framing and shipping.

Can you make a tufted rug from my photograph?

Yes. Sharp, well-lit photographs with uncluttered backgrounds work best. Because yarn thickness sets a natural limit on detail, we simplify the design somewhat — which produces a piece that reads far more strongly from a distance.

How long does a commission take?

About 21 days on average. Large or highly detailed pieces can take longer; you are given a firm delivery date when the order is confirmed.

Should I buy a finished piece or commission one?

A commission makes sense when a specific size is required, a personal image is involved, or you want an exact colour match with the room. If none of those apply, finished pieces in the gallery are usually more affordable and available immediately.
