How Are Original Painting Prices Determined?

The price of an original painting does not come from canvas size alone. Materials, technique, time, the fact that a work is unique and the artist's working method all matter. Two pieces with the same dimensions can therefore carry different prices. The useful question is not merely "how much", but what object and what process that amount represents.

Size matters, but it is not the whole price#

A larger surface requires more paint and support material. Preparation, application, drying and packing also become harder as a work grows. Working on a 120x180 cm canvas is physically different from working on 35x50 cm paper. A large piece needs more studio space, more material and stronger protection in transit.

Price cannot be reduced to a rate per square centimetre. The 100x70 cm Parsel Dokuma is listed at TRY 13,000, while the 120x180 cm 1982 Zıvarık is TRY 20,000. Surface area alone does not account for that relationship. The density of the composition, technical decisions and the individual production process are part of the amount.

Measure your wall before choosing for a home. Leave breathing room between the outer edge of the work and nearby furniture. A few centimetres may affect placement before they affect budget. If you plan to frame it, ask whether the dimensions on the artwork page include that frame.

Why technique and materials change the calculation#

Acrylic painting, dry pastel, engraving and linocut are not made in the same way. Acrylic on canvas depends on surface preparation, paint layers and drying order. Dry pastel on paper is vulnerable to rubbing and needs suitable mounting and framing. Engraving and linocut first require a plate or block before an impression can be printed.

Material cost is only one part of the total. Student paint and artist-grade pigment do not behave alike; paper weight, canvas weave and stretcher strength influence the result. Expensive supplies alone do not make a strong artwork, however. How the artist uses them matters more.

Look for technical details on the product page. Arta Kalan, for example, is a 60x70 cm acrylic on canvas. Röprodüksiyon is a 35x50 cm dry pastel on paper. They have different care and display needs even before their prices are considered.

The labour you cannot see#

A buyer sees the completed surface. The price also contains sketching, material tests, surface preparation, application, correction and final inspection. Some works are built with a quick gesture. Others need repeated layers. A small, detailed piece can take longer than a larger, quieter composition.

The original idea is part of the work too. An artist does not simply apply paint. They decide what to omit, where to direct the eye and how colour should behave on the surface. Those decisions draw on visual knowledge developed over years. A price reflects thinking time as well as visible material.

Original, original print and reproduction are different#

A unique painting cannot be compared directly with a mass-produced poster. An original work is an object made directly by the artist. In an original print such as an engraving or linocut, the image is pulled from a matrix prepared by the artist. If it belongs to an edition, the edition size and impression number should be stated. A reproduction is a copy of an existing image.

How to compare prices fairly#

Start by placing like beside like. Comparing acrylic on canvas with a mass-produced poster, or a unique object with a retail print, produces a misleading result based only on size and image. Technique, edition status, artist, materials and sale terms belong in the comparison.

Then ask a more personal question: do I want to see this every day? Original art is not purchased merely to fill an empty wall. When the size works, the information is clear and the piece is something you want to live with, price comparison has done its job.
