A Meaningful, Handmade Gift for Teachers' Day
Looking for a Teachers' Day gift that is not another mug? Handmade prints, small original works and personal commissions, sorted by budget and timing.
Updated:

The best Teachers' Day gift is small but lasting: a hand-pulled linocut or etching, a small original painting, and a few handwritten lines to go with it. Plan the budget around what the class collects together rather than what one parent can spend. Check the school's rules on gifts first, and order a few weeks before 24 November.
Every year, in the last week of November, teachers' desks in Turkey fill up with the same things: mugs, flowers, bottles of cologne. All given with good intentions, most of them gone within a week. Below is how to choose something that stands apart from that pile, how to organise it as a class, and the calendar for getting it there by 24 November.
What should you consider when buying a gift for a teacher?#
Start with the school's rules. In state schools teachers are public servants, and what public servants may accept as a gift is limited by ethics rules. Private schools often have their own policy too. Do not guess. Ask the class representative or the school office. An expensive gift can leave a teacher having to refuse it instead of being able to say thank you.
Then think about where the gift is going. It is handed over at school but it ends up at home. A 35x50 cm work on paper travels inside a folder. Taking a 100x70 cm canvas home on public transport is a project of its own.
Taste matters as well. However fond you are of a teacher, you do not know their walls. Very personal colours and figurative subjects that invite interpretation are a risk. Calm subjects such as a still life or architecture find a place in most homes.
Who the teacher is changes the answer too. A class teacher spends four years with the same children, which makes them the right person for a lasting piece and a card from everyone. For a subject teacher who sees the class two hours a week, something smaller is enough, and probably more appropriate.
And remember that a teacher may receive gifts from thirty families on the same day. What stays in mind is rarely the most expensive one. It is the one where it is clear who it came from and why.
Ideas by budget#
The prices below are gallery prices on 23 October 2026, the day this article was published. Prices and availability can change; the current details are on each work's page.
- Gourds (Kabaklar): multi-colour linocut on paper, 50x70 cm, 2,000 TL. Gourd and leaf shapes turn into a rhythmic pattern between two layers of blue. A quiet subject that suits a kitchen as well as a study.
- Nefertiti: etching, 35x50 cm, 3,000 TL. Fine line work made by biting a metal plate with acid in a controlled way. For a history teacher the subject speaks for itself.
- Röprodüksiyon: soft pastel on paper, 35x50 cm, 5,000 TL. Do not let the title mislead you. It is a hand-drawn pastel study after Feyhaman Duran's still life with figs, not a printed copy. An art teacher will know how many hours a study like this takes.
- A small personal commission: on the custom order page the calculator shows a price range as soon as you choose size and technique. The school garden, the class mascot or a drawing the children made together could all be the subject.
More paintings are on the painting page. If you are buying on your own with a tight budget, the suggestions in buying original art on a small budget are worth a look.
To be honest, if there is no budget at all, a picture the child made and two lines of thanks are kept longer than most bought things. Those are usually what sits in a teacher's drawer for years.
How do you organise a class gift?#
A shared gift solves both the budget and the "who gave what" comparison. A few rules keep it running smoothly:
- Put one person in charge. When the same person collects the money, places the order and receives the parcel, nothing gets lost.
- Keep contributions voluntary. Some families will not take part, and the card can still carry the whole class's names.
- Keep the maths simple: add the price of the work and the shipping fee, then divide by the number of people. A 2,000 TL print in a class of 25 comes to 80 TL each, before shipping.
- Narrow it down to two options and vote in the parents' group. A group given five options often never decides.
- Write the dates down at the start: when the money is due, when the order goes in, when the gift is handed over.
Decide early whether a work on paper will be framed. A frame means a separate budget and a few extra days. Giving it unframed and leaving the choice to the teacher is perfectly fine, because a frame is chosen for the room it will hang in. If you are unsure, choosing a frame may help.
Why are linocuts and etchings good gifts for a teacher?#
An original print is the most accessible form of a handmade work. The artist makes the matrix personally: carving a soft block for a linocut, scratching or acid-biting a metal plate for an etching. Each impression is then inked and printed by hand, one at a time. What you get is not a copy of a photograph but a work pulled by hand from the artist's own block.
There are practical advantages too. Being on paper, it is light and goes home from school in a document folder. The sizes suit most walls: a 35x50 or 50x70 cm piece fits above a desk or along a hallway.
For a teacher there is one more layer. The process can be explained. Carving the block, pulling each print by hand, the small differences between two impressions from the same block: all of it could become a conversation in class. I explained how etching works in detail in what an etching is, and gathered the general rules of giving art as a gift separately.
Timing: when should you order to make 24 November?#
There are two different calendars.
Finished works from the gallery are packed and handed to the carrier within one to three business days of payment. Time in transit depends on the address. If you are buying a finished piece, the second week of November is comfortable. Do not leave it to the final week; once a weekend gets in the way, a one-day delay easily becomes three.
For commissions the time depends on size and technique. The estimated production time is given to you in writing before the order is confirmed, and delivery never exceeds 30 days. So if you want a commissioned piece for 24 November, the time to decide is the last week of October or the first days of November. Details are on the delivery and returns page.
If you are having it framed yourself, add that to the calendar as well.
Adding a note to the gift#
Take the note as seriously as the gift. A teacher may take a print off the wall years later, but often keeps the card.
A note that works is specific rather than general. Instead of "thank you for everything", write down one thing the teacher did. Reminding a teacher of the break time they spent explaining fractions again to a child who could not get it says more than a long paragraph of thanks.
With a class gift, each child can write one line in their own hand. For a first year who has just learned to write, that is a gift in itself.
Do not write on the back of a work on paper, and do not tape the card to it. Tape leaves a yellow mark on paper over time and can tear the surface when it comes off. Put the card in its own envelope and attach that to the outside of the parcel.
The current list of finished works is in the gallery, with size and price on each page. If you have a commission in mind, you can start on the custom order page by choosing a size and technique.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much should you spend on a teacher's gift?
There is no fixed amount; the school's gift policy decides. For an individual gift something small and symbolic is enough. A class collection can stretch to an original work: on 23 October 2026 the prints in the gallery were between 2,000 and 3,000 TL, and 2,000 TL in a class of 25 is 80 TL each.
Is it appropriate to give a teacher a gift?
In most schools a symbolic thank you is welcome, but the rules vary. Teachers in state schools are public servants, so what they can accept is limited by ethics rules, and private schools may have their own policy. Ask the class representative or the school office beforehand.
Will a handmade gift arrive by 24 November?
For a finished work, yes: it ships within one to three business days of payment, so ordering in the second week of November is comfortable. For a commission the production time depends on size and technique and is given in writing before you order; since delivery can take up to 30 days, decide by late October or early November.
What makes a good class gift?
Something lasting that no single family would buy alone: an original linocut or etching, a small painting, or a commission connected to the school. A card with one handwritten line from each child makes it personal.
