What to Check When Buying Original Art Online

When buying original art online, check the record before the image. The title, artist, dimensions, technique, materials, price and availability should be clear on one page. Then assess whether the photographs show enough, whether checkout belongs to the correct domain and what the delivery terms say. These checks take minutes and reduce the risk of receiving the wrong size, an unclear reproduction or a questionable payment request.

Verify the seller and the artist#

A shop name is not enough. Look for the artist's real name, education or practice, and a working contact channel. Social media can help, but it does not replace the site's own about and contact pages. You should know who made the object you are about to buy.

Ask what original means#

The word original is sometimes used loosely to mean a poster with an original design. A unique painting, an editioned original print and a reproduction are different objects. A canvas may be worked on directly by the artist. An engraving or linocut can be printed in a limited edition from a matrix the artist made. A reproduction copies an existing image.

Find written answers to these questions:

• Is the work unique?
• If it is a print, which process was used?
• If editioned, what is the edition size and impression number?
• Is there a signature or label on the reverse?
• Has it previously been sold or changed ownership?

Never estimate size from the screen#

A product image cannot communicate the difference between 35x50 cm and 100x80 cm reliably. Both appear at the same width on a phone. Read the centimetres and mark them on your wall with paper or masking tape. Remember that adding a frame increases the outer dimensions.

Nefertiti is 35x50 cm, Arta Kalan is 60x70 cm and Salt Galata is 100x80 cm. Their cards can look similar online, but their presence on a wall is very different. It also helps to confirm whether a seller writes measurements as height by width or the reverse.

A paper work may need a frame and mount. Stretcher depth matters on canvas, while fringe or binding can affect the outside size of a tufted piece. Ask exactly what the listed measurement includes.

Read photographs for detail#

One distant view may not be enough. Look for the front, surface texture, edges and, when possible, the reverse. Allow for colour differences between screens. A bright phone can lift dark tones; a warm display mode can make whites look yellow.

A close view helps you read paint surface, brush marks and the condition of paper. A rear view may show a canvas stretcher, label and hanging method. If a frame appears in the photograph, check whether it is included in the sale. Ask before paying if the answer is absent.

Reverse image search can reveal whether a photograph has been taken from another source. If the identical file appears in hundreds of poster shops, clarify any claim that the product is unique. A similar composition alone does not prove copying, but repeated commercial use of the exact file is reason enough to ask.

Technique, materials and condition#

Mixed media is not always a sufficient description. Is the support canvas or paper, is the paint acrylic, was the pastel fixed, and what matrix produced the print? Care and framing depend on those answers. If a seller cannot list every material, they should at least identify the support and main technique.

For a second-hand piece, request a condition report. Cracking, cockled paper, damp marks, fading, tears and previous repairs should be disclosed. When buying a new work from a living artist, confirm that the product images show the actual object being shipped.

Check price and payment#

A price far below the apparent market is not automatically a bargain. Compare technique, edition status, size and artist first. A poster and a unique canvas are not the same product. Read delivery and returns before paying#

Ready works are packed and handed to the carrier within one to three business days after payment reaches the seller. The schedule for a commissioned piece is stated separately in its quotation and pre-contract information. Inspect the parcel with the carrier present. If damage is visible, request a damage report before accepting it.

Withdrawal rights and commissioned goods do not follow identical rules. Ready products have a statutory withdrawal process, while goods made to a consumer's specifications or clearly personalised may fall under an exception. Recording a short opening video is not a legal requirement by itself, but it can document transit damage. Keep the packaging until any issue is resolved. Store the studio label or care note that arrives with the work as well.
