How to Choose an Original Painting as a Wedding Gift

An original painting can remain in the couple's shared home for years. A good choice does not have to mean the most expensive work. The real task is to read the couple's taste, understand the wall available and consider the possibility of an exchange before buying.

Read the couple's shared taste first#

Knowing what one partner likes is not enough. The work will enter a shared home, so it should be something both people can live with. If asking for a photograph of the room feels too obvious, begin with colour. Their invitation, textiles chosen for the new home, moving photographs or places they both enjoy can provide useful clues.

When no clear preference appears, choose a medium or small work that can move between rooms rather than a large dominant painting. An abstract composition can be easier to place than a figurative work, though this is not a fixed rule. If the couple already lives with figurative art, a more distinctive choice may fit them better.

Do not shop as if the painting were for your own sitting room. Your quiet beige palette may look lost in their colourful home, while the strong figure you love may not suit their plain walls. When uncertain, share the artwork link with a close family member. It is a simple way to get a second opinion without giving away the surprise.

Which size is safer when you do not know the wall#

A large work carries more risk when the new home is not yet set up. 1982 Zıvarık, at 120x180 cm, requires a broad wall. Nefertiti, at 35x50 cm, can move more easily between an entrance, a study corner and a narrow wall.

The range from 50x70 cm to 60x80 cm is flexible in many homes. The available Gourds measures 50x70 cm, while Tını is 60x80 cm. Similar dimensions do not create the same visual weight. A work on paper grows once framed; a canvas painting reads through its existing outer dimensions.

If you can obtain wall information, ask for two measurements:

• The width of the furniture and the space between its top edge and the ceiling
• The uninterrupted width of the intended wall

A single work above a sofa or console usually sits more comfortably when it remains clearly narrower than the furniture. Marking the artwork's width and height with paper tape is the safest way to test the size before committing.

Consider budget together with technique#

Price in original art is not calculated from centimetres alone. Technique, surface, method of production and whether the work is unique all affect it. A linocut on paper and a large acrylic on canvas do not belong in the same size calculation.

In the live collection on 8 September 2026, the 50x70 cm colour linocut Gourds is listed at TRY 2,000 and the 35x50 cm engraving Nefertiti at TRY 3,000. The 60x70 cm acrylic on canvas Matching Socks is TRY 5,000, while Arta Kalan in the same dimensions is TRY 7,000. These examples show that a modest budget does not restrict you to a mass-produced decorative print.

When comparing prices, check whether a frame is included, whether the work is on paper or canvas and what delivery adds to the total. The current delivery charge is shown in the order summary during online checkout. Do not build an unlisted campaign or business discount into the decision. If a reduction is not visible, it should not be assumed.

A ready work or a painting commissioned for the couple#

A ready work is more predictable because you buy the object you have seen. Its colour, dimensions, surface and completed composition are known. It is also the safer route when the wedding is close. Ready works are packed and given to the carrier within 1 to 3 business days after confirmed payment, but contact the studio first if arrival on a fixed date is essential.

A commissioned acrylic painting allows the palette, dimensions and composition to be planned for the couple's home. Peck Art Studio's live calculator currently gives a preliminary estimate at TRY 15,000 per square metre for acrylic on canvas. The minimum order value is TRY 3,500, the estimated making time is 21 days and production begins with a 30 percent deposit. The final price is confirmed after the reference and dimensions have been reviewed.

A commission does not promise to reproduce a person from a photograph as an oil or charcoal portrait. The offered painting option is acrylic on canvas. You can describe the required palette, dimensions and compositional direction in the custom order form and attach a reference image.

Keep the surprise while reducing the chance of a poor choice#

There is a middle position between a complete surprise and a safe choice. You can select the work, deliver it to your own address and inspect it before giving it to the couple. Another option is to prepare a shortlist of two or four works and let them make the final choice. The budget still comes from you, while they have a say in what enters their wall.

Do not leave a custom commission until the final days before the wedding. The live estimate of 21 days is a making estimate; design review, approval and shipping also belong in the schedule. Allow for intercity delivery even when buying a ready work.

Add a small card giving the title, artist, technique, dimensions and acquisition date. Read delivery and return terms before giving the gift#

Ready works carry a 14-day withdrawal right from delivery. Work produced to the couple's selected dimensions, colours or composition may fall under the exception for goods made to personal requirements. Legal rights remain where an item is damaged, defective or materially different from what was agreed.

Inspect the parcel while the courier is present. Ask for a damage report if it is crushed, open, torn or wet. Photograph concealed damage after opening, retain the packaging and report it within 3 days of delivery. Decide from the live collection#

Set the budget and approximate dimensions first. Then compare available paintings through the price, materials and availability on their actual product pages. If the work you like has sold, describe the preferred dimensions and colour direction in the custom order form instead of expecting a duplicate of a unique painting.

The care behind a wedding gift tends to last longer than its price. A work chosen with a real wall in mind, checked at full dimensions and scheduled for delivery will still feel considered after the wrapping has gone.
