Mama

The Story

Mama is a deeply personal figurative portrait created using acrylic paint, with my mother serving as the model. Exploring themes of motherhood, love, strength, and personal memory, the work reflects my intention to translate my mother's significance in my life, her character, and her energy into a visual language of my own rather than simply reproducing her physical appearance. My admiration for my mother and the special bond we share form the foundation of this composition. Drawing on the color intensity and layering possibilities of acrylic paint, I developed pronounced brushstrokes, vivid color transitions, and expressive surface textures. The dominant burgundy and crimson tones of the background contrast with shades of blue and turquoise, creating visual tension within the composition. Sharp intersecting lines and geometric interventions resembling bursts of light introduce movement and rhythm across the painted surface. The stylized representation deliberately moves away from my mother's actual appearance. Instead of focusing on physical resemblance, I chose to emphasize how I perceive and experience her presence. I interpreted her ability to find harmony within differences through the interaction of colors, forms, and expressive gestures. In this way, I transformed the portrait from a simple representation of a face into an intimate expression of personal emotion. For me, Mama is more than a painting of my mother. It is a visual reflection on love, female strength, family bonds, and the profound impact one person can have on another's life. Through the expressive possibilities of acrylic paint, particularly its colors, textures, and layered applications, I sought to make visible the feelings and energy that my mother inspires in me.
