The Story
Vanitas, derived from the Latin word vanitas, is a concept that evokes mortality, the futility of worldly pursuits, and the transience of earthly desires. In art history, it refers to a still-life tradition that contemplates the human condition through symbols of the inevitability of death and the fleeting nature of life. Gebe(r) reinterprets this tradition through the objects of contemporary consumer culture. A birthday cake, a plastic flamingo, toys, and confectionery become modern symbols of happiness, while the skeleton, positioned among them, quietly reminds us of the only constant truth: mortality.
