From the Studio in Summer: On Light and Color
In summer, the light in the studio changes completely. The light coming through the window at nine in the morning takes on a yellow I never see in winter, and that makes the yarns in my hands look entirely different.
Some days I prefer to work early in the morning because of this; before the light hardens, I can see the colors in their more "true" form. Around noon, when the sun is directly overhead, I move the yarn boxes into the shade, because choosing colors in direct light has always misled me.
Something similar happens with painting too. In summer, vivid, saturated colors feel closer to me; in winter, I drift toward earth tones and gray. I suppose the season outside seeps into the brush in my hand without me even noticing.
A few new pieces I've made in the studio this summer are fed exactly by this play of light. I'll be sharing them on our gallery page soon.
